After the filling dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse just moments earlier, my sweet tooth started emerging from my gums. Considering the time and our location, most of the places we would have tried were either too far away or all closed.
Even a quick search on Urbanspoon didn’t give Haley and me anything promising within our radius. As we drove around searching for a small store to satiate our sugary craving, we settled for another chain franchise that we knew would be open and are well-known for their desserts… Baskin-Robbins.
Neither of us had been to Baskin-Robbins in a while. The world’s largest ice cream franchise was very familiar to me, particularly during my adolescence. For nearly 10+ years of my life as a child, I would receive a Baskin-Robbins ice cream cake consisting of Very Berry Strawberry ice cream on white sheet cake. Even during my freshman year of college, I had a part time job at Baskin Robbins and still consider it one of my favorite places to work. Oh how I missed Baskin-Robbins. Seemingly overshadowed by the emergence of boutique dessert shops, the brand still seemed very alive and kicking… especially on that Tuesday night.
Pulling up to the store, the parking lot was packed with cars and tables were filled with friends and families already savoring their cold, sweet treats. Even after Haley and I both ordered, a steady flow of customers kept entering the premises.
The store was very modernized and neatly arranged with colorful walls, signs, and decor. A lot different from dated look of the last time I visited one of their locations several years ago. But one thing remains the same: Baskin-Robbins still delivers a nice variety of ice cream flavors at an affordable price.
Tuesday night at this particular location was 99 cent scoop night. Haley opted for some vanilla frozen yogurt with a sprinkling of M&M’s candies. On the other hand, I wanted a sundae styled to my own liking. For $3.99, I was able to make a 2-scoop sundae based on my specifications. Obviously I wanted Very Berry Strawberry and strawberry topping with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry but unfortunately I was rushed while choosing my second flavor due to the number of people that had just walked in. I hastily chose an ice cream flavor I never tried before… some kind of cheesecake ice cream.
Overall my sundae was delicious and this visit made me remember why I’ve always liked Baskin-Robbins. Baskin-Robbins has some of the best strawberry ice cream. The strawberry topping added tartness to the sundae but the cheesecake ice cream was a little disappointing. It tasted like vanilla with graham cracker bits. I barely tasted any cheese cake flavoring through several bites. While it wasn’t bad, I definitely would have chosen more wisely had I known. Of course it’s my fault for not asking for a sample first. After all, that’s what their iconic pink spoon is for because you’re sure to like one of their many flavors.
