If You Have A Sweet Tooth, Then Julia’s HomeStyle Bakery Is For You

Julia's HomeStyle BakeryThis past Sunday, Haley was craving some cupcakes for dessert. We were in Murfreesboro that day and just had lunch with our friends James and Emily from Madisonville. Before heading home, we decided to stop by Gigi’s Cupcakes. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize that this particular Gigi’s Cupcakes was not open on Sundays. Disappointed, we were about to head back until Haley mentioned that I brought a cupcake home in the past from “some bakery in Murfreesboro”. I knew exactly what bakery she was talking about. It was Julia’s HomeStyle Bakery. I had nearly forgotten about that visit and it wasn’t a visit per se because I never actually set foot in the store. They were sponsoring a canine festival in the parking lot a few months ago and I won a door prize which consisted of a single cupcake for people and a cupcake for dogs. All we remembered was that the cupcake was darn good.

Julia's HomeStyle BakeryAs we stepped into the store, I was amazed at how big the store actually was. Julia’s is wide-open shop is filled with various samples of cakes showcasing their impressive cake decorating abilities. More impressive though, is the assortment of full-sized cakes, mini cakes, pies, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, and much more that are neatly arranged behind four huge bakery glass cases.

Cakes at Julia's HomeStyle BakeryWhile we originally only went in for a cupcake or two, the temptation was too great. We decided to get a sampler of various pastries to find out just how good this bakery really was. Our $9 sampler consisted of a decorated shortbread cookie, a sugar cookie, 3 filled thumbprints (shortbread cookies with various fillings), an almond cupcake, and a mini carrot cake.

Dessert AssortmentMy favorite of the three were the shortbread cookies & thumbprints. It should be obvious why because shortbread is made with a large proportion of butter, which gives it the short/crumbly texture. Perfectly sweetened, these shortbread cookies were as good as it gets.

Haley’s chose the mini carrot cake with cream cheese icing as a part of the sampler. This dense cake had a strong presence of spices that I particularly liked but the icing was a bit weak as it only had a faint flavor of cream cheese.

Pumpkin Shortbread CookieThe sugar cookie was slightly above average. It tasted like every other sugar cookie I’ve had in the past but it edges beyond average because it was still chewy and soft from being baked earlier that day. To me that’s one of the best things about cookies. They seem to taste so much better if they are freshly baked.

Last we have the almond cupcake. I’m not too keen on almond-flavored desserts and Haley selected this one. This cupcake was nicely frosted with a sprinkle of sliced almonds on top. The cake was still moist with a creamy filling in the middle. Had there not been a filling, I probably would have eaten a lot less of the cupcake.

Carrot CakeFrom what I experienced so far at Julia’s HomeStyle Bakery, I’ll definitely have to make a repeat visit. The sampler that we had nowhere comes close to the amount of desserts available. Of what we did have though, everything was freshly baked and completely satisfied our sweet teeth. Haley liked it so much; she jokingly asked that I bring her a cookie on my way home every day after work. I might have to take her up on that offer… of course if I did, I would have to pay a visit to my dentist more frequently.
