Today is National Hamburger Day. According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, hamburgers are the most popular food on the grill with steak being a close second place. So it’s no wonder that hamburgers get their own national holiday. I’m not actually sure who came up with the holiday, but many restaurants are celebrating this day through various advertisements and news sources. Particularly, Back Yard Burgers is celebrating this day by offering the first 100 diners with a free Classic Burger at various locations. For those of you lucky enough to get one, congratulations! What better way to enjoy a free burger than with a friend? Fortunate for me, I showed up at 11 AM with my friend Marty so that we could partake in the free, delicious burger goodness.
I’ve been to many Back Yard Burgers restaurants before and although each looks different, all of them have been consistent with the taste of their burgers (which is the most important). Their burgers are different than your run-of-the-mill fast food burgers. Their claim to fame is the fact that their burgers are actually grilled, giving them the authentic taste reminiscent of grilling your own burgers at home. Since the promotion was for a free Classic Burger, I opted to have everything on mine with cheese, a regular-sized seasoned fries and a regular soft drink. Even without the promotion, the cost is relatively cheap for the quality of burger you get. You get a huge 1/3rd pound burger, fries & drink around the same price as the McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder meal.
The Classic Burger w/ everything consists of a 100% 1/3rd pound Black Angus beef patty with American Cheese, lettuce, mayo, tomato, red onions, pickles, mustard, ketchup. The seasoned fries are very similar to the Checkers/Rally’s seasoned fries. Seasoned with a blend of spices and fried to that familiar orange color that are characteristic of all seasoned fries.
Just like a “back yard feast”, other menu items include items such as a Bacon Cheddar Burger, Mushroom Swiss Burger, burgers of various sizes (double & junior) and even Turkey Burgers for those looking to be a little healthier. Chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, shakes and even root beer floats are on the menu.
As I mentioned before, Back Yard Burgers boasts their made-to-order grilled burgers tasting just like grilling at home. That distinctive charcoal smokiness is present in their patties and is absolutely delicious. I’m not sure what kind of seasoning are on the burgers, but I’d sure like to know what they use. Despite having tried marinades, sauces, and seasoning on my burgers and dozens of trials under my belt, my grilled burgers never come out like Back Yard Burgers. Combine that characteristic taste with a juicy patty and all the traditional condiments and you have yourself a perfect burger. Who needs all those fancy-schmancy toppings & sauces? Sometimes a simple burger, done right, is all you need for it to be great.
