Great Lunch Specials Found at Bar-B-Cutie

Bar-B-Cutie in Murfreesboro, TNOn Tuesday, I had to run some errands and didn’t plan on eating out but Mike & Marty, friends from work, insisted that I eat with them. After a lengthy discussion over the phone, I was getting tired of their indecisiveness and told them to text me on their decision. My stipulations were that it had to be close to work and quick because I was already out & about. A couple minutes later, I got a text: Bar-B-Cutie.

Bar-B-Cutie is the name of local BBQ franchises around the Middle Tennessee area with the headquarters located in Brentwood, Tennessee. Existing in the Nashville area for over 60 years, Bar-B-Cutie is now found in Tennessee, Ohio, Georgia, Texas, and even Spain. Just this year, Bar-B-Cutie won first place in the following categories from “Toast of Music City”, The Tennessean‘s own annual reader’s poll: Best Barbecue, Best Lunch, and Most Family Friendly Restaurant.

Bar-B-Cutie in Murfreesboro, TNBar-B-Cutie‘s menu offers a selection Soups, Salads, Stuffed Potatoes, Country-Style Sides, Desserts, Sandwiches, and Pork/Chicken/Beef/Turkey BBQ Options. Most of the items fall between $4.99 and $6.99 but the real value is in the BBQ plates. They do offer platters, which are larger portions but they are a bit more expensive. Both plates & platters include two sides and a choice of bread (cornbread or Texas toast). You can add a drink for just 99 cents.

The Murfreesboro location had two specials going on that day. You had your daily special, listed below and then another special that allowed you to get any platter (except ribs and brisket) for just $4.99 as well. I’m not sure if the “any platter for $4.99″ deal is for a specific day, but I went on Tuesday for those of you wondering.

Pulled Pork, Fried Okra, Macaroni and CheeseI opted for the Hickory Smoked Bar-B-Q platter with macaroni and cheese, fried okra, and Texas toast with a sweet tea. Due to the promotion, I ended up saving $2 off my meal for a total of $6.56 including tax. So you must be thinking “for $6.56, that BBQ must have tasted like microwaved slop”. On the contrary, the BBQ was quite good. Bar-B-Cutie actually barbecues their meat and in regards to the pulled pork, it’s actually slow cooked in a smoker for 17 hours. Despite being priced similarly to fast food restaurants, you actually get authentic BBQ at a couple dollars less than sit-down barbecue restaurants.

Pulled PorkThe hickory smoked pulled pork was warm and moist with a nice smoky flavor. The variation of coloring in my pulled pork proved that it was indeed smoked… as evident by the pink coloring caused by the smoke ring (a chemical reaction from the smoke and meat).

Although I love the taste of pulled pork, you can’t eat it without some kind of sauce. Bar-B-Cutie offers 4 different sauces at the table: Carolina Sauce (Mustard flavor), Hot Sauce (Spicy & Vinegary), Mild Sauce (Vinegary), and Sweet Sauce (Tomato-Based Sweetness). I’m not too keen on mustard sauces and the Sweet Sauce was just too sweet for me.  So I drizzled both the Hot & Mild sauces together to get the perfect mix.

Unfortunately the sides I selected were not nearly as good as I hoped they would be. The only good side dish was the fried okra… which is as good as fried okra can get with a crispy batter coating. The Texas toast appeared delicious with that golden, buttery, toasted outside, but it was actually stale. The worst was the macaroni and cheese. The cheese sauce was very watery with barely any cheesy taste. Imagine pasta noodles in orange-colored, slightly salty milk and that’s what you would have gotten. Had I known that the sides were going to be of that quality, I would have easily selected something else, such as the mashed potatoes and gravy that Mike said was pretty good.

Despite the variations quality of the side dishes, one can easily be rest assured that the BBQ at Bar-B-Cutie is authentic and delicious. Between my entree, Mike’s turkey and dressing, and Marty’s (I forgot what he ordered), we all agreed that the meat portions were delicious. Marty even went back today and got the Country Fried Steak. On top of that, having affordable $4.99 specials gives you another good reason to visit Bar-B-Cutie.
