Dinner at Raz’z Bar & Grill

Dinner at Raz’z Bar & Grill in Smyrna, TN marks my first official review on HyoungryMan.com. I’ve actually been to Raz’z twice before, so I was happy to return when my girlfriend Haley suggested that we go there for Friday night dinner.

Raz’z has two locations, but I’ve never been to the one in Nashville. The one in Smyrna is located right in front of Lowes, next to Buffalo Wild Wings. The establishment is fairly large & clean, splashed with black, light khaki, languid lavender, and maroon colors. Seating is available in the patio, the bar, large dining area with tables & booths, and a jazz dining hall.

One of the reasons I like Raz’z so much is because Chef Raz Ademosu, or Chef Z, has always been on the premises when I’ve dined there. He’s always dressed in standard chef clothing except for his pants, which have a very unique design on them (very similar to pajama pants). Chef Z is very friendly and is sincerely concerned on the quality of your meal. You will see him often talking among the patrons and shaking people’s hands. He truly makes you feel welcome during your visit.

Raz’z is advertised as a Cajun restaurant but they have a lot more than that. The menu boasts a plethora of salads, sandwiches, pasta, beef, pork, chicken and seafood.  In addition, they have daily specials that are repeated every week. Their Cajun entrees are considered their signature dishes and I love Cajun food but I have yet to try them. Maybe next time!

We chose the Jazz dining hall because there was a 2-person jazz band playing that evening. In the Jazz dining hall, we were served by a young waiter named Jon. You could tell he was relatively new because he had a hard time remembering the specials, but he was a good waiter who kept our drinks full and frequently checked on us. Our order consisted of the Chef Z Nachos as our appetizer, lunch portion of the Fettuccini Imperial (grilled chicken breast, ham, mushrooms, garlic in alfredo sauce with garlic bread), and 14 oz Prime Rib with a baked potato (butter only). We both had side salads and dinner rolls.

Jon delivered the dinner rolls, side salad, and Chef Z Nachos at the same time. The salads consisted of romaine lettuce, shredded cheese, tomatoes, and bacon. Personally I would have liked more items in my salad (like croutons & carrots), but it was a good, fresh salad nevertheless. The rolls were dense & yeasty with a slight sweet flavor that reminded me of homemade bread I had as a child. They were served with whipped butter.

The Chef Z Nachos are tortilla chips, chili, cheese, lettuce, jalapeno peppers, tomatoes, sour cream, and salsa. I’ve had this dish before but this time they skimped on the cheese (there was barely any on there) and I always get the chili on the side because I hate it when my tortilla chips get soggy.  The chili was slightly salty/spicy with beans and meat that reminded me a lot of my friend Sam’s homemade chili. The consistency was very similar to chili that you would get on a chili dog. If I would change something about this dish, I’d add some chicken or ground beef to it.

Of the 3 times I’ve been to Raz’z, I always get the same entree. I have a rule of thumb that I should always try different dishes but Raz’z prime rib is so good because it is consistent and flavored well. The prime rib is spiced with salt, pepper, onion, & garlic powders. I barely used any of my au jus for dipping because it was already hot & juicy. Haley’s fettuccine was very good but we are biased after tasting fettuccine from an authentic Italian restaurant back in New York. Nonetheless it was creamy & buttery and is one of the better fettuccine alfredo dishes I’ve had.

If you’re ever in the Smyrna area and want to try a local restaurant that you won’t experience anywhere else, I would suggest you try Raz’z. Has anyone tried this restaurant before? What did you have?
