Broadway Brewhouse Downtown: Great Local Pub With More Than Just Bar Food

Broadway Brewhouse & Mojo DowntownBroadway Brewhouse & Mojo DowntownFor Friday night, Haley wanted to go to Downtown Nashville. We haven’t been in that area for a while and she wanted to listen to some live music after dinner. Being a sweetheart, she offered to take me to someplace new – Broadway Brewhouse & Mojo. I’ve heard of Broadway Brewhouse before but have never been a patron there. She mentioned her coworker Jennifer and Jennifer’s husband Seth frequent there quite often and recommended it.

To tell you the truth, I was a little apprehensive in going to a bar for dinner because when I think of bar food, I think of low quality food with a limited menu selection. Haley gave me a chance to come up with an alternative, but I failed to decide and ended up saying “OK” to Broadway Brewhouse.

Broadway Brewhouse & Mojo DowntownI learned that there are 4 locations of Broadway Brewhouse in Nashville with the Downtown location being the 3rd newest. Housed in its own building, you’re greeted by the soft glow of dozens of neon signs and flat screen televisions. Broadway Brewhouse is a vast pub serving 70-something beers on tap and a wide array of wines & spirits with a 60 foot main bar and an additional smaller open bar called the “Air Bar” looks out over Broadway with open windows.

Broadway Brewhouse & Mojo DowntownThe most amazing thing is that Broadway Brewhouse serves more than just finger foods and random sandwiches that traditional pubs serve. Broadway Brewhouse serves up a multitude of menu items that can cater to any appetite. A wide array of appetizers, soups, salads, and house specialties are lined up on the menu as well as various Mexican dishes. They even have different types of pizza and a long list of burgers and sandwiches to choose from.

Not being able to decide what I wanted, even after Jamie our server recommended a few things, I went with my gut feeling of getting a full order (10 pieces) of their Roasted Wings with half of them in the Chipotle BBQ sauce and the other half in Panama sauce. I was a bit surprised that a full order only consisted of 10 wings (I’ve eaten at least 20 in a sitting) and even more surprised at the price tag of $10. That meant each piece was a dollar and was having buyer’s remorse. These wings had better be spectacular. Not thinking the wings were enough, I also got a pint of their Mojo Gumbo and asked for it to come out first. I love gumbo and haven’t had it in over a year.

Broadway Brewhouse & Mojo DowntownThe Mojo Gumbo came out on a large bowl with a couple of packs of saltine crackers. Served over a bed of white rice, the gumbo was served in a thick brown roux with meaty chunks of chicken and Andouille sausage and tiny bits of finely chopped vegetables. The most apparent were onions and bell peppers but I couldn’t tell if there was anything else. The flavor of the gumbo was rich and hearty with ample spiciness. At first I thought the gumbo lacked some needed salt, but after a few slow bites I realized that it was perfectly seasoned and didn’t need any changes.

Broadway Brewhouse & Mojo DowntownI’d like to mention that our service was great and Jamie was efficient. She checked on us, kept our drinks coming, and brought our food out really fast. I only got halfway through my Mojo Gumbo when my Roasted Wings came out. The Roasted Wings were huge! They easily dwarfed what I was typically used to from chicken wings at other places. Celery and two plastic ramekins full of spicy Southwestern-style ranch dressing divided the two flavors of lightly glazed wings. The wings were very meaty with a slightly crispy outside. The Panama sauce (hot) was sweet with a medium heat. Pieces of pepper flakes from the sauce graciously adhered to each wing. The Chipotle BBQ sauce was also sweet but had a tangy kick to it with a smoky aftertaste. Of the two sauces, the Chipotle BBQ sauce was my favorite because it had such an intense flavor. I’ve never experienced either sauces before at any restaurant and can truly say they are unique.

I had an excellent experience at Broadway Brewhouse & Mojo and would easily recommend it to anyone. The atmosphere is great; especially if you sit next to the window at the “Air Bar”. It was a beautiful evening in Nashville that Friday night and the temperature was perfect. Although I can’t speak for the other items on the menu, based on the Roasted Wings and Gumbo alone, you can’t go wrong with those two dishes. Despite the high price tag on the wings, I think they are definitely worth the price to try at least once because of their size and uniqueness of the sauces. I’ll definitely be making a return trip downtown or possibly the other locations soon.
